About Our Club
Club History
The Lafayette Garden Club was organized in May of 1930, by Mrs. John William Harrington.
The first officers elected were Mrs. John William Harrington, President; Mrs. Harold
Demanade, Vice President; Mrs. E. A. O’Brien, Secretary-Treasurer. They adopted as their
slogan “The Land Belongs to the Landowners, but the Landscape Belongs to the Eye of the
Beholder.” The Club was Federated in 1944.
With this in view, the group undertook the beautification of the City of Lafayette. We, the
members of the Lafayette Garden Club, proudly begin our ninth decade of service to our
community. This year with our theme The Earth is Ours To Care For, we join with District III,
Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and National Garden Clubs, Inc. in a unified effort to
support their projects.
