About Our Club
Club History
The Lafayette Garden Club was organized in May of 1930, by Mrs. John William Harrington.
The first officers elected were Mrs. John William Harrington, President; Mrs. Harold
Demanade, Vice President; Mrs. E. A. O’Brien, Secretary-Treasurer. They adopted as their
slogan “The Land Belongs to the Landowners, but the Landscape Belongs to the Eye of the
Beholder.” The Club was Federated in 1944.
With this in view, the group undertook the beautification of the City of Lafayette. We, the
members of the Lafayette Garden Club, proudly begin our ninth decade of service to our
community. This year with our theme The Earth is Ours To Care For, we join with District III,
Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc. and National Garden Clubs, Inc. in a unified effort to
support their projects.

President's Message
Dear Lafayette Garden Club Members,
As I write this, Summer 2014 is already half over and it's time to send the new yearbook to the presses. I've recently taken the time to newly organize my home office and have come across many reminders of our activities and accomplishments this past year (which will, of course, be reflected in the contents of the new yearbook). And it has caused me to reflect on the goals I set last year. Some goals we have accomplished, some we will continue to work on this year. But everything has continued to center around my byline of getting involved and making a difference. I can't really take credit for the originality of this idea as it was already set in place by club members whose many unselfish acts and tireless efforts have made so many differences and contributions to our community both in the past and for years to come.
So, I say thank you for letting me have the helm for a little while and I am looking forward to an equally successful year coming up.
Sincerely,
Cynthia
“Cinde’” Risinger

Lafayette named Cleanest City
(The Daily Advertiser) by Kris
Wartelle - Lafayette was named the
cleanest city for 2012 today (June
14, 2012) by the Louisiana Garden
Club Federation (LGCF).LGCF
Chairman Jean Gilstrap said the
purpose of the contest is “to clean and beautify the cities
in Louisiana by raising awareness of our litter problem and rid
our cities of litter.” In all, ten cities were recognized throughout
the state- one from each category according to size and
population. Lafayette Public Works Director Tom Carroll
accepted the award on behalf of Lafayette and Mayor President
Joey Durel who was out of town. Carroll said the honor was a
team effort and thanked members of his department as well as
the public and local businesses.“It’s really the people of
Lafayette who take pride in what we’ve got,” said Carroll. “A
lot of it hinges on businesses and private citizens and our guys
who put a lot of effort into it.”
Gilstrap said the cities are judged according to how litter free
certain areas are within the city limits. She says judges will look
at public buildings, parks and recreation areas, approaches to
the city, business establishments and residential neighborhoods
among other things.
“It’s about litter,” said Gilstrap. “We don’t want to see any of it.
That’s a big no no. When tourists and businesses come to a
town they want to see that the town has pride. They want to be
in a place that takes pride in itself.”Gilstrap says she and the
other club members plan to visit all ten winners around the
state today and tomorrow. The following is a list of all 2012
Louisiana Cleanest City winners.Collinston, Marion, Sterlington,
Jean Lafitte, Farmerville, Scott, Abbeville, Hammond, Lake
Charles, and Lafayette.
