Garden Therapy
National Garden Club, Inc. Award
Lafayette GardenClub won the National Garden Therapy
Awardthis spring. Glenda Balliviero has chaired this
committee the last 2 years and it has given her much
satisfaction. These folks are thrilled to death when she
walks in. They come in their wheel chairs and walkers and
you'd be surprised how interested they are. "Bringing joy to
them with horticulture has been so very special. One lady
even calls me 'Mama'" says Glenda.
Volunteering members will provide garden therapy and
various horticulture programs for seniors at both The Greenhouse, a community recreation center for seniors,
and Evangeline Oaks Guest Home, a residential nursing facility. Members will provide gardening magazines
for libraries at both facilities, potted plants to be given to seniors or planted for enjoyment in the patio garden
at the home and horticulture specimens for enjoyment. The programs will, also, provide horticulture
information and hands-on activities in order to make gardening fun yet educational.
