Garden of the Month & Civic Pride
October 2024
The recipient of the Lafayette Garden Club's October 2024 Garden of the Month Award is Mary Beyt. (Yes, she's Joey's sister.) The home is located at 126 Girard Woods Drive, Lafayette, LA. Mary, a Master Gardener, is a One-Woman Show having transformed her yard over the years since she moved "back home" from New York. And she's not through yet!
The first thing you notice when you drive up are the giant native beauty berry bushes at the end of the drive. And there are two more on the other side of the yard. Mary said they just showed up, but she loves them. A large mature oak tree stands in front providing shade and a magnolia and a cypress tree (given as a present from her son) grow in the side beds. Beds in the front and side yards are filled with color as you'll see from the photos, containing gingers, caladiums, pentas, Blue Daze, cat's whiskers, native mallow, a large yellow angel trumpet, an original Camelia, a candlestick cassia and more. A large caster bean plant, Rudbeckia, cannas, chocolate plant, Curcuma gingers, various arrangements of potted plants and more fill in the back beds. The porch is reserved for bromeliads and succulents which were rescued as their original owner who moved didn't wish to take them.
At the back of the yard where the large caster bean is, begins a path leading to an area of the yard that is reclaimed property. It is a work in progress, still being developed but a brick walkway has been laid and plans are to transform this area further into a place to relax and "get away". Mary calls it "being in the woods." Mary likes to use natives like pokeweed in this area. She has plans eventually, now that she's retired from being a home decorator, to recreate her whole back yard with multiple seating areas of repose.
Thank you, Mary, for sharing your beautiful garden and ideas.

Welcome to Lafayette Supreme Grill! It has been a much-anticipated addition to our city. The architecture of the building, both inside and out, is beautiful as is the meticulously planned landscaping.
Meet Andrew Lugo, General Manager of the restaurant, shown receiving the Lafayette Garden Club CIVIC PRIDE AWARD for October 2024. The front of Superior Grill is designed for enjoying outdoor dining. At the corner of the entrance stands a large pot with a boxwood topiary and spilling pink vinca along with benches for anyone waiting the delicious Mexican cuisine. A hedge of California privet provides a bright yellow accent to the walkway. Surrounding the building are many palms strategically placed which will add even more to the landscape as they mature. Pots are filled with various plants like Lady palms, evergreens, vinca, hibiscus, asparagus ferns, coleus and privet. Beds are filled with foxtail ferns, Shi-shi camellias, Xanadu philodendron and Japanese holly. Two areas further down are planted with a colorful array of zinnias, coleus, Blue Daze and bottle brush shrubs flanked by tall lanterns. Very large hanging baskets of purple and lime green sweet potato vines hang outside the windows. Red crepe myrtles trained into trees line the brick walkway while established purple ones remain in the parking lot along with the mature oaks.
Be sure to notice the colorful mural with the message "Greetings from Lafayette" which is painted on a wall at the back of the building where another seating area surrounds a brick patio.
Congratulations to Superior Grill and thank you for providing such a lovely spot in Lafayette!

Garden of the Month & Civic Pride
September 2024
The Lafayette Garden Club is so excited to announce that for the first time the Garden Club of the Month and the Civic Pride Award for September 2024 is presented to a dynamic duo, Bryan and Camille Veron. In addition, Camille’s parents Doug and Della Luquette received the Garden of the Month last September 2023!
Proudly standing in front of their home is Bryan and Camille. The Veron home is located at 204 Bent Tree Trail Lafayette, La. To understand the work that Bryan and Camille conquered you have to look at the before and after photos, what a transformation. The design and beds are beautifully landscaped with Chinese Fringe bushes, Boxwood shrubs, Drift roses and loads of pink Vinca and Dianthus annulus. Large white planters are placed within the beds filled with Crocus and annuals to transition into Fall. The highlight are the paired pottery planters draped with Sweet Potato vine.
The backyard is equally beautiful with expertly placed beds located at the back and side of the home. Camille and Bryan are avid gardeners and outdoors enthusiasts who created a relaxing space to share with their family. The beds are landscaped with Azaleas, Drift roses, Nandinas, and a Japanese Red Maple that will mature beautifully to provide shade for the back patio. FYI Bryan is a very talented carpenter and made the outdoor patio benches and coffee table. Treat yourself and drive by to steal ideas or just to enjoy the view.
Little Veron’s is located at 403 Rena Drive Lafayette, La. Bryan Veron is the Manager and stands next to his award, Civic Pride . The property is landscaped with beautifully groomed Cypress and Crepe Myrtle trees. The perfect sized landscaped area is complete with manicured golden Euonymous ,Flax Lily, and Drift roses. The beds are maintained by Camille’s sisters Erin Luquette Brown and Rachel Luquette the owners of the Happy Helpers.
Thank you to Bryan and Camilla for helping to make our community a better place to live.
